A year or so back I bought into Survey Scout and tried on several of their recommended companys. Few would pay in cash, most would enter you in some kind of sweep stake, others offered prizes you didn't need. And yes lots of them were covers for selling products in order to qualify.
I too immediately began to be besieged with lots and lots of spam mail to the point that I had to cancel the Yahoo website i was using. They or their companies were obviously giving away my address despite claims to the contrary.
