I was invited to a Robert Allen free 3 day seminar in Chicago IL. The speakers were knowledgeable and passionate. At the end of the second day they hit us with the package they were trying to sell. On the third day they systematically took us individually aside. The real estate professional I spoke with asked me if I was planning on doing the program. I told him, not immediately, so he asked me what my plan was. I told him my plan and he said it sounded good and left it at that. A couple weeks later I received a sales call from the Robert Allen institute and that guy poured it on pretty heavily. I asked him what it was like working for Mr. Allen and he said it was great and that Mr. Allen requires all his employees to develop an exit plan to not work a "job" for Mr. Allen for more than 2 years. I explained that I was happy to excecute my plan as-is and the salesman kept pushing. I asked if they would consider reducing the price and was told "no". He kept touting the benefits and I said I wasn't doubting their programs, but I wanted to negotiate a better price. I finally ended up getting short with him and telling him, look I read Mr. Allen's book and went to his seminar. He teaches that in negotiations when one party isn't willing to bend, the negotiations break down and that's what is happening here. His response was that the price was a good value, so we ended the conversation. A few weeks later I received another call from them. This was a different package they were trying to sell. I answered some questions and when I apparently didn't answer them to their satisfaction was told that I "wasn't coachable".
I liked the free seminar and toying with his sales people was fun. If you know your own mind you can pick up some valuable info and meet some like-minded people. Likewise, you can get some great free info from Mr. Allen's website. His workshops may work well for someone willing to go for it completely. It still takes a certain type of individual to make it in real estate. My advice is to get the free information and if ir makes you some money then you can afford to take the more expensive workshops. But be prepared for the follow up sales pitch. |
