Review Title We need a website that seperates the genuine from the faux
Review It's about time someone sorted this out and developed a website that seperates the fake competitions, etc from the genuine ones. Maybe an independent website that has a list of possible genuine ones and asks people who have taken part in them if they were genuine, and if not names and shames the fake ones, so they have a star rating based on how genuine they've been in the past. Obviously even the most genuine of competitions is going to have one or two problems, but the ones that certainly are scams are going to come up more and more. One handy thing I've found is to use a Whois on the website. If you use a whois to find out information about who owns the website then you can quite easily figure out if its a scam. My sister was going to enter a modelling competition at one of these sites in London, I did a whois of this website and it turned out the actual site was based in Poland. On top of that all the "links" to other agencies on the same website were all operated from the same address in Poland. I found this other website for her which claimed to have been on the net since 1993. I did a whois on this one and it came up with the name and address of the model place that matched the contacts on the website, the domain had also been registered since 1993. They also didn't charge her for sending her portfolio (the other one would have charged her for them to produce her portfolio). When she sent her portfolio they were very open about it and said that she wasn't what they were looking for but suggested other genuine places to try. I can't remember though now the one it was. In the end she give up and is now pursuing a different career. I did find a website recently that claimed to separate the wheat from the chaff but it turned out that after doing a whois on the domains and their recommendations all their recommendations and themselves were all operated by the same company (scamfreetop10.com)
