| Credit Card Fraud Protection |
|
Credit card fraud has become a very big issue now-a-days on the internet. It is increasing like a wild fire. Not only the credit card holders, even online merchants, if they are cautious they can prevent the criminals from committing online purchase theft. Periodical checking of credit card statements and being careful with the card are the most important things to ensure prevention of this crime. Some of the Credit Card fraud protection tips are mentioned below : - After the sale, the merchants should ensure that they obtain signature of the customer in the sales docket and verify whether the signature matches with the signature on the customer's credit card.
- Merchants should insist on customer's identification like State Government or Military ID and Driving License. But Visa, MasterCard, and American Express's agreement do not allow the request of additional identification from customers.
- "Checking the last four" technique is the most common technique. Here the merchant has to verify whether the last four digits on the mag-stripe matches with the last four digits embossed on the credit card. This technique prevents "non-matching plastic" where in the credit cards would have got re-encoded with different skimmed dump.
- The merchant has to ensure that he has a proof of customer's card present at the point of sale. This proof can be obtained by electronically reading the card's magnetic stripe and submitting certain data which is present on that. Sometimes the sale is made by most point-of sale systems without the card by using manual card imprinter to take the impression of the card's embossed digits and symbols or by reading the card's smart chip (if any).
- The merchant should insist the customer at the time of the order to fax photocopies of both sides of the card. This proves that the customer has the card with him.
- The merchant should make a phone call to customer to check whether the customer is genuine or not. There can be a possibility that the scammer may have given the actual phone number of the genuine customer. This is another best way to prevent fraud which is wisely used by customer care service.
- If incase a fraud is detected or suspected by the merchant they should immediately report the fraud to credit card fraud protection agencies and ensure that the criminals are caught. Many stories of arrest of such criminals are on the internet.
