An HYIP is known for accepting small investments but promising high returns and that makes it one of the most common financial scams of all.

A HYIP works on the ponzi scheme approach. A ponzi scheme is a fraudulent investment scheme which involves paying abnormally high returns (profits) to investors out of the money paid in by subsequent investors, rather than from net revenues generated by any real business.

The way one of these get popular is because a ponzi scheme offers abnormally high short-term returns in order to entice new investors.

The high returns that a ponzi scheme advertises (and pays) require an ever-increasing flow of money from investors in order to keep the scheme going.

The ponzi approach helps the scam continue as long as new investors are found and/or old investors leave their money in the scheme, which is known as compounding. The old investors leave the money in the scheme because they are promised even higher profits.

HYIPs typically offer 1% or more interest rates per day on invested funds. In some HYIPs the daily interest rates surge much higher reaching 250% and sometimes even as high as 700% a day.

Clearly these are scams, in which the operator eventually steals the deposited money. The investors in HYIPs run a great risk of never seeing their investment again.

HYIP operators often call their programs "ponzi-structured games" where the money one cannot afford to lose shouldn't be invested because HYIPs do not promise any guarantee of earnings or refunds.

They are frequently advertised in spam emails, forums or mailing lists. People are typically given high commissions (for example, 9% of invested funds) when they provide a referral of a new customer.

The HYIPs are almost always not based in the United States, Japan or European countries because they have strong laws against unregistered investment programs. Usually HYIPs do not disclose any details about the principals, operators, management, location, or other aspects etc.

But, the E-currencies such as e-gold and StormPay have broadened the horizons for HYIPs that can now operate across international boundaries, and can accept large numbers of small investments using these services.
