Loan and Grant

"Loan and grant" scams are schemes designed to rob people of their money. Loan and grant scams rip off hundreds, and sometimes thousands of dollars from consumers.

A person hoping to win government grants or small-business loans unknowingly becomes an easy target of these loan and grant scams. New York is the worst affected state in the U.S. by this type of criminal activity.

These loan and grant operations are able to suck people in so easily because they actually use the names of genuine American companies such as "Mortgage Expo", "Empire State Financial Services" etc.

When the consumers find the names of the legitimate companies on Internet they generally loosen their guard. They pay the fees requested, but in return only receive pamphlets or books that list government agencies and programs. In other words, they get things that you can receive almost anywhere for free.

Teresa A. Santiago, Chairwoman and Executive Director of the Consumer Protection Board, said, "All of these offers are bogus. The loans don't exist and neither do the millions of dollars in 'free money' that is supposedly available from the government,"

The criminals use the "free money" in their advertisements as the biggest lure to entice people. These advertisements usually appear on the Internet or in newspaper classified sections.

They claim to offer loans for small businesses, and the interested consumers are directed to send thousands of dollars via Western Union to pay for insurance on the loan, but in reality the loans are never delivered. The scammers collect the money thru Western Union without disclosing their true identity or location.

Jeffrey Boyce, Deputy Commissioner for Small Business Services at Empire State Development, recommends that consumers visit the state's web site -www.nylovessmallbiz.com- to check out the legitimate government resources to help their small business get started or expand.
