Paid Surfing
"Paid surfing" is essentially a legal variation on the classic pyramid scheme that became popular in the late 1990s, prior to the dot com crash. The concept borrowed a lot of ideas from multi level marketing (MLM) in that to make higher returns you really need to recruit others to surf more than actually surf yourself.

All Advantage was the first, well-known company paid to surf the net. The scheme capitalized on the notion that anyone could make money on the internet without much effort.

Paid surfing requires you to surf certain web sites for a predetermined amount of time (usually limited to around 20 hrs per month). You get paid to surf in terms of cents per hour and you also get paid for recruiting other into the program. I assume you're beginning to see why any actual money made using one of these programs would have to come from the recruiting side.

The business model ran into severe problems because of spammers breaking the law, auto surf programs that simulated a person surfing the net, and the .com crash. All of this resulted in advertisers pulling money out of this type of business.

After the .com crash these companies went under so fast that most users were never paid. As of 2005, there are effectively no more serious pay to surf programs, however, the concept lives on in new incarnations such as "Free iPod" schemes.

Other types of paid to surf schemes that have popped up since 2005. Some are things like "paid to read e-mail". Normally these web sites offer meager sums like 1/10 of a cent to 5 cents per e-mail. You therefore have to read an enormous amount of e-mails before you can earn anything substantial.

Among these there are certain paid surfing sites which claim to pay anywhere from $1 to an unimaginable $500 just for reading an e-mail. If you haven't guessed, this is obviously a scam and it's best to stay away from them.

Online surveys are yet another form of paid surfing. You are instructed to conduct a survey on stipulated conditions and you could earn points on such surveys. Some sites allow you to convert your points to cash.

Almost all of the surveys sites I have ever tried or heard of turned out to be total scams... and those that are not generally cannot pay enough to make a decent side income.

From my personal experience these paid surfing programs are just a big waste of time. You simply cannot make a substantial amount of money doing this. Not to mention that the chances of getting scammed are extremely high!

I don't waste my time with things like paid surfing anymore because I found something that's a lot better. This opportunity has changed the way I think about making money.
