This scam comes up every year about Christmas time.
There are a few things that should get alarm bells ringing when receiving anything like this.
Firstly - the card usually tells you what is in the package - "Dear sir or madam, We tried to deliver a DIGITAL CAMERA to you today but you were out, please call this number to retrieve your DIGITAL CAMERA".
If they're a mail service how do they know what is in your package??? And if you notice the card is printed meaning it has been prepared before even sending it. If the post man can't deliver something he's not going to lug round a big printer and computer just so he can print a professional looking card to tell you what is in the package, he carries a pen and scribbles it onto the card, ticking various tick boxes, etc, or at most a machine that prints out something thats similar to a receipt.
Secondly - The phone number - Any number that starts 09 in the UK you should be very wary of. All numbers that start 09 in the UK are PREMIUM rate (there were a few 0990 numbers originally which weren't quite premium rate - UCI used to have a 0990 number, but the majority of these have changed to 08 numbers to save confusion). Normally if the phone number you are trying to call starts 09 you should certainly check it out on the internet before you phone, and if possible try and get an alternative number for that company or call the operator.) |
